Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is an internationally renowned temple of learning located in the sacred city of Varanasi, India. Founded in 1916 by the great nationalist leader Madan Mohan Malaviya, with the support of distinguished personalities such as Annie Besant, the university was established under the B.H.U. Act of 1915. It was envisioned as the "University of India" and has since emerged as one of the country’s most prestigious institutions.

BHU played a significant role in India’s freedom movement and has contributed immensely to nation-building by producing eminent scholars, scientists, technologists, artists, and leaders. Over the decades, it has grown into one of Asia’s largest residential universities and a premier center of higher education in India.

The main campus spans approximately 1,300 acres, featuring well-planned roads, lush greenery, magnificent architectural buildings, a temple, and even an airstrip that was used for military training during World War II. The university is also expanding with an additional campus at Barkachha in Mirzapur district, covering around 2,700 acres.

Academically, BHU comprises 6 Institutes, 14 Faculties, over 140 Departments, multiple interdisciplinary centers, a women’s college, and constituent schools, offering programs across humanities, social sciences, science, technology, medicine, fine arts, and performing arts. The university is home to advanced research centers and specialized departments under national academic programs.

The campus also houses the renowned Bharat Kala Bhavan, a museum known for its rare and valuable collections. Its 927-bed teaching hospital is equipped with modern medical facilities. In addition, BHU offers excellent sports infrastructure, a large auditorium, a flying club, and several support services including a printing press, publication cell, canteens, and student welfare units.

With a vibrant academic community of around 15,000 students, 1,700 faculty members, and thousands of staff, BHU attracts students from across India and many countries worldwide. The university continues to promote intellectual excellence, cultural enrichment, and global integration.

Banaras Hindu University truly represents a universe in itself — a microcosm of knowledge, culture, and innovation.
